Laura Watkin Girlguiding Cheshire Forest Gambia 2014-2017 Volunteering Project

About Me

I have been a member of Girlguiding since 1987 and have recently been awarded with my 10 years long service award.  I am a senior section and assistant guide leader in Hough Green, Widnes. I am also Assistant County Commissioner for Cheshire Forest. Girlguiding has provided me with many opportunties to make new friends, travel, challenge myself, and enjoy lots of fun filled activities. Most importantly guiding encourages me to to help other people and do a good turn every day!

Cheshire Forest Gambia Project 2014-2017

I am part of a group of girls and young women from Girlguiding Cheshire Forest who are travelling to The Gambia in April 2014. We will be working on a number of community action projects in the local area, close to the capital city of Banjul. Our programme includes things like:

· Painting a classroom in a local school, running an eye clinic, building a toilet.
· Running peer education sessions with local teenagers on key issues

Running science workshops with local schools and girl guides / scouts.
· Working with members of the local community to help them learn new skills

New 2017: Community Health day - basic first aid, oral hygiene, sex education

The trip will be an amazing experience for me and will teach me lots of new skills, as well as being a big boost to my personal confidence. I know it will give me a different perspective on my life and will deepen my understanding of the challenges faced by young women of my age in developing countries.

Whilst in Gambia, we will be volunteering with the Gunjur Project:
